Questions & Answers

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of instant passivity of the conscious mind by-passing the critacal factor of thought.

Hypnosis creates a heightened sense of awareness, of self, and the out side world with out judgment or prejudice.

A simple model of the mind?

A Child's mind from age zero to five years, records negative and positive emotions, as they are perceived with the action and re-action of life around them. The sub-conscious mind is in control of in-voluntary functions, our nervous system, endocrine system, dreams, imagination and life functions. From age six to thirteen, the mind puts in to place the critical factor of thought (the conscious mind); witch interrupts in coming information based on the recorded emotions in the sub-conscious mind.

The conscious mind then compares the incoming data to recorded emotions, and determines the response. Sometimes the response will be not to let the data in, ignoring it and suppressing the thought. Most of the responses to our adult life are based on emotional content learned before the age of five. This shows us one of the reasons we fail at things even though we know exactly what the steps to successes are. The underlying recorded emotions sabotage our efforts.

Do you lose control when in hypnosis?

It is a Hollywood myth that you can control someone with hypnosis. No one will do something they do not want to do.  You may have seen a professional stage hypnotist and thought they had control of the people on the stage. People that volunteer for a part in the show want the attention, and the feeling of loss of their inhibitions. The hypnotist facilitates a relaxed state for the sub-conscious mind to act out suggestions of the fun loving stunts on stage. The same thing happens when we have been drinking and the critical factor of our conscious mind fades, and inhibitions are dropped. Hypnosis is in no way like being drunk, quite the opposite. You feel very aware of your self and safety, your will not do something out of the normal range of your values and principals. Hypnosis makes the people on stage so relaxed, and free to express them selves, that the don't judge the out come of suggestions given, and just act as their sub-conscious mind sees fit.  When working with hypnosis for change in your life, in a group or private session, you can see your self with out the critical factor distorting your self-view, freeing you to make the change. It is a myth that you can not hear what is going on, or remember when you are under hypnosis. Everyone can be hypnotized if they want to.

How is hypnosis different than meditation?

Meditation is commonly the clearing of the mind. As the mind clears, the critical factor fades, as it has nothing to focus on. Some meditations use a mantra or sound to focus on, these practices are very close to the hypnotic trance state. Hypnosis is a guided focusing of the mind, self and or facilitator guided. With slow relaxation type inductions to hypnosis, the critical factor fades to the side very much like meditation, while with a spontaneous or rapid induction, the critical mind is working on a task, or is startled away, leaving the subconscious mind at the surface. Meditation, guided meditation, guided visualization, and hypnosis all work with the trance state, brining the subconscious to the surface.

What is a trance state?

The trance state is a natural non-ordinary state of consciousness. We find our selves in a trance more often than we might think. Have you ever been driving your car, and automatically you drive to work, or past the off ramp you wanted. When the trance comes on, the critical thinking mind is not at the surface of our consciousness, and the subconscious takes over. The critical mind may be day-dreaming, or focused on a thought or task.

What is Breathwork?

Breathwork is the practice of controlled breathing to go in to a trance state. Breathing at a faster and deeper state than normal has been practiced for the past four thousand years. Breathwork used in dance, and in ceremonies traces back in to many diverse cultures as a spiritual practice. Breathwork brings the breather inward into a place of healing and discovery.  Our breath connects us all, the unseen air we breath, gives us life, one breath at a time. Experiences with breathwork vary greatly with each individual: some have visual or aural experiences in trance, while others find themselves at one with the world. Breathwork creates a profound connection to self, and inward views to higher forms of consciousness. Breathwork takes on many forms and practices; there are all types of systems created to experience this non-ordinary state of consciousness. All of us have what is necessary to have the experience. In breathwork we have found that (like the Rolling Stones Song) "You don't always get what you want, but you will find some times you get what you need." Each breathwork experience will be different, and will bring in information  for weeks and even years after. Inward Journey Outward Growth facilitates breathwork in a safe, loving environment. We do not use only one type of breathwork; we take parts of the forms and let the process unfold as it will. It is our feeling that breathwork is a self-expression from the inside out, life and spirit, all within each of us.

What is guided visualization?

Guided visualization is a narrative in metaphors, normally in a storybook format. There is not a structured hypnotic induction, while the process induces a trance state. Guided visualization is used for the client to imagine a process, emotion, goal, and or memory. Guided visualization can be held one on one or in groups.  Guided visualization is used with many other types of therapys including  hypnosis.

What is dream work?

Dreams are a mix of emotion and thought expressed by our subconscious mind when we sleep. Dreams sometimes have to do with an emotion, and or conflict we are working with in waking life. Dream work is the process of brining the emotional content to the conscious mind to process the thought, and work past conflicts. Repetitive dreams are normally an important thought coming up from the subconscious. Fear based dreams can be worked with as a team until we reach an understanding of the thought, then the fear based dream can be released.

What is a lucid dream?

A lucid dream is just like real life, you cannot tell the difference when in the dream. Some people may find that they can "wake up" in the dream and take control, creating the experience, as they want.

What is a regression?

A hypnotic regression brings the client back to a past experience in life to release emotional trauma buried in the subconscious. People can experience the past like it is happening today, or some distance can be set up like it is on T. V. In times of trauma, fear, or shock, the subconscious will bury a memory deep in our mind to keep the day-to-day life possible. Later after the experience is blocked, people may notice an emotion that is under or over stated in life, due to the underlying issue. Some issues are set at a young age, so going back as an adult brings in a new understanding of the blocked experience. Healing comes with understanding and releasing the emotion. When the block is lifted, like dominoes, new life and emotions come forth opening up the hart and mind. Some clients may experience a “past life” memory. With a past life type regression it cannot be said that the facts are true
(or in metaphor), based on the buried emotion; in any case the healing is the same.
